Reclaiming Strength: Support for Survivors of Sexual Assault
Sexual Assault
Sexual assault encompasses any form of unwanted, coercive, or forced sexual contact, regardless of whether it’s perpetrated by acquaintances or strangers.
In the context of the Texas Penal Code, there exist distinct legal definitions for rape and sexual assault. However, it’s essential to understand sexual violence as a broader spectrum of unwelcome, non-consensual sexual actions that can span from subtle to intensely violent.
This umbrella term, “sexual assault,” encompasses various actions, including but not limited to rape, sexual threats, intimidation, incest, sexual assault by intimate partners, child sexual abuse, human sexual trafficking, sexual harassment, street harassment, and other forms of unwelcome, coerced, or non-consensual activities.
Frequently, the term “sexual abuse” is also employed to encompass the wide range of actions that fall under the category of sexual assault.
